Sitemap finder and checker
Quick answer
Enter a website and the finder looks for its sitemap where crawlers do: the Sitemap lines in robots.txt first, then /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml and /sitemap-index.xml. For each one found it checks that it loads, is a sitemap or sitemap index, and how many URLs or sitemaps it lists.
Where it looks
- Sitemap: lines in /robots.txt
- /sitemap.xml
- /sitemap_index.xml
- /sitemap-index.xml
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a website's sitemap?
Look in its robots.txt for a line starting "Sitemap:". If there is none, try /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml at the root of the domain.
Does my sitemap have to be at /sitemap.xml?
No. It can live at any URL, but then name it in robots.txt with a Sitemap: line or submit it in Search Console, or crawlers may never find it.
Why does the checker say my sitemap is not valid?
Usually because the URL returns an HTML page, a redirect to one, or an error, rather than XML with a urlset or sitemapindex root element. The validator tool goes through the file line by line.
